Despite intense anticipation, India's batting phenom Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had to wait for his international debut during the first T20I against Ireland, as India's management elected to stick with their proven opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
What stopped Sooryavanshi's India debut? Iyer answers
This explosive duo retains their spots at the top of the order after playing a pivotal role in powering India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title with their aggressive Powerplay exploits. Although Sooryavanshi’s spectacular form forced selectors to include him in the squad alongside three established openers, captain Shreyas Iyer clarified at the toss that the decision boiled down to prioritizing continuity and experience, assuring that the "gun player" would certainly get his opportunity when the time is right.
"Unfortunately, no. We are backing majority of our cricketers who have been doing well throughout the season. So he will get his opportunity when the time comes," Iyer said at the toss.

The young prodigy's call-up to the national setup was the direct result of a blockbuster run in IPL 2026, where he amassed a staggering 776 runs over 16 innings to claim the coveted Orange Cap. His credentials were further bolstered by his impactful performances for India A during their successful tri-series campaign against the 'A' sides of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Despite these dazzling accolades, the team management opted for a seasoned, balanced bowling blueprint for the Belfast opener, leaving Sooryavanshi on the sidelines alongside Suryansh Shedge, Prince Yadav, and Ravi Bishnoi.
Marking his first official act as India's full-time T20I skipper, Iyer won the toss and elected to field first, citing the unfamiliarity of the Belfast venue. Explaining that the fresh pitch and local environmental conditions were entirely new to the majority of the traveling squad, Iyer noted that chasing would give the visitors the best chance to assess and adapt to the surface quickly.
