On one of the toughest batting tracks to witness Test cricket of late, India rewrote record books as they wrapped up the second Test of the two-Test series at Newlands, Cape Town in 107 overs. This is the shortest completed Test match in the history of the game.
The previous record belonged to Australia. In February 1932 at Melbourne, the Bill Woodfull-led Australia beat South Africa by an innings and 72 runs. Australian bowlers bowled out South Africa for 36 and 46 in the first and second innings respectively. Bert Ironmonger took as many as 11 wickets. The match ended in 109.2 overs.
On the other end, the shortest Test match resulting in India's win came in Ahmedabad in February 2021. India beat England by 10 wickets from 140.2 overs.
Mohammed Siraj took a six-wicket haul in the first innings to bundle out South Africa for 55. It is the lowest all-out total against India in the format. Siraj became the second Indian to take a fifer in the first session of Day 1 of the Test.
After India’s record-breaking collapse losing six wickets for no run, Aiden Markram’s counter-attacking century helped the hosts set a target of 79 runs.
In the run chase, India lost three wickets but won the match in 12 overs to wrap up the Test within five sessions.
India became the first Asian team to beat South Africa in Cape Town. This is India's sixth-biggest Test win in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries in terms of wickets in hand. It is also India’s fifth Test win on South African soil.
South Africa managed to score 231 runs against India in both innings. This is the fifth-lowest aggregate against India after getting all-out in both innings of a Test.
India leveled the series 1-1 and climbed to the top in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings. India have a win percentage of 54.16.
