Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) staged a turnaround never seen before in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 history. They beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at home and booked their spot in IPL 2024 playoffs. RCB’s designated finisher and wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik gave a speech in the dressing room after the 27-run win. During the speech, he said that MS Dhoni hitting a six out of the stadium was the best thing to happen in the game.
“The best thing to happen today was MS Dhoni hitting that six outside the ground. We got a new ball which was much better to bowl with. Yash, that was good bowling. (If) You have a doubt, always ball a hip high full-toss and leg stump. It is a good mantra to follow when the ball is wet,” Karthik said in a video posted by RCB on X.
As Karthik was giving his speech, Virat Kohli said, “good game awareness”. In the 12th over, Kohli and skipper Faf du Plessis were seen arguing with the on-field umpires as they wanted to change the ball. The slippery condition of the ball was causing problems for bowlers. Lockie Ferguson bowled a couple of no balls and Yash Dayal struggled with it as well.
When Dayal bowled a low full-toss to Dhoni, he dispatched it out of the stadium which led to the ball change. The ball gripped better and Dayal was able to perfectly execute his back of the hand slower balls. He got Dhoni’s wicket and conceded just one more run in the last four deliveries.
Karthik also wanted the players to be proud of what they achieved. He feels that in the future edition of IPLs, when teams will be written off at the halfway mark, they will look to RCB for inspiration.
“Jokes apart, we should be really proud of this journey we are having. People will always remember certain journeys. The way we have come back after losing six on trot, people will remember this team for a long time. Every year in this tournament when you hit the seven-game mark, there will be probably one or two teams which have probably won one or two. They will look to us and say, RCB did it, that was special. We are gonna repeat what RCB did. That's what we all play cricket for… We have within our grasp, to do something, where people will remember us for many many decades. They’ll say wow, that RCB team was special,” he added.
