On May 26, Shreyas Iyer became the first captain to lead two different franchises in an Indian Premier League (IPL) final. Shreyas-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) outclassed Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in all departments of the game to win the final by eight wickets with 57 balls to spare. After KKR won their third IPL title, Shreyas’ nine-year-old tweet that was posted on May 26, 2015, went viral.
"I want to complete my B.Com. To be honest, I haven't had time to look at my books and my exams are around the corner," Shreyas wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Shreyas’ journey over the years
Shreyas made his debut in all formats of the game in domestic cricket in 2014. He made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2015 and scored 439 runs from 14 games. In 2018 edition, he took over the captaincy from Gambhir midway through the season. In 2020, he led DC to the final. After he was released by DC, he joined KKR in 2022. However, a back injury ruled him out of IPL 2023. Nitish Rana led the side in his absence. In IPL 2024, he returned and helped KKR reclaim the trophy after a decade.
Shreyas in elite list
He became the seventh captain to win an IPL trophy after Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, David Warner and Hardik Pandya.
Shreyas’ performance in IPL 2024
In the final, he did not make a single change to the combination. After KKR bowled out SRH for 113, Shreyas had to walk out to bat when Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer had taken them to the doorstep of victory. In the ninth over, he got off the mark with a boundary. He remained unbeaten for six runs from three deliveries as Venkatesh finished the run chase.
In IPL 2024, he scored 351 runs from 14 games at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 146.86. He scored two half-centuries in the season.
