Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) achieved their fifth victory of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by a margin of 78 runs. This win propelled CSK to the third position in the points table. Meanwhile, SRH slipped to the fourth spot following their recent loss.
As CSK ascended in the standings, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC) dropped to the fifth and sixth places, respectively. LSG suffered a defeat to table-toppers Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 27 in Lucknow. On the same day, DC secured their fifth win of the season against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Delhi.
GT, PBKS languishing in bottom half
Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) continue to occupy the seventh and eighth positions, respectively. PBKS has managed only three wins in nine matches, while GT has secured four victories in ten matches. GT's latest match resulted in a nine-wicket loss to RCB on April 28. Conversely, PBKS achieved a significant win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), chasing down a record target of 262 and winning by eight wickets. KKR currently holds the second spot with five wins from eight matches.
Time running out for MI and RCB
The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), have secured only three wins from nine matches and have lost their last two games. RCB remains at the bottom of the points table, having won only three of their ten matches, although they secured victories in their last two encounters against SRH and GT.
Meanwhile, RR is nearly assured of a playoff spot with eight wins from nine matches, comfortably leading at the top of the table.
