IPL 2024 Purple Cap: Harshal Patel ties Jasprit Bumrah in wickets column, Sam Curran enters the top five; check list here

Harshal Patel has surged into contention with 13 wickets from eight matches.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Harshal Patel has ascended to the second spot in the Purple Cap race after claiming a three-wicket haul against the Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 21. Harshal now shares the position with Mumbai Indians’ (MI) star bowler Jasprit Bumrah, both having taken 13 wickets. However, Harshal's economy stands at 9.58 and thus, Bumrah occupies the pole position.

In addition to Harshal's performance, his teammate and all-rounder Sam Curran also secured a wicket, placing him in fifth position in the Purple Cap standings.

Harshal's rise has displaced Rajasthan Royals' (RR) ace-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who now holds the third spot. Following Chahal is another MI bowler Gerald Coetzee, who entered contention after claiming a three-wicket haul against PBKS on April 18.

However, Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman and Delhi Capitals' (DC) Kuldeep Yadav have dropped out of the top five contention.

Here's the updated list of bowlers in contention for the Purple Cap after the recent doubleheader:

Jasprit Bumrah (MI)

The Indian star pacer, known for his toe-crushing yorkers, continues to dominate with 13 wickets from seven matches and an exceptional economy of 5.96. Bumrah recently showcased his prowess with a five-wicket haul against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 11. He will be in action next in the game against the Rajasthan Royals on April 22.

Harshal Patel (PBKS)

PBKS pacer Harshal Patel, who had a relatively ordinary season last year, has surged into contention with 13 wickets from eight matches. However, his economy stands at 9.58. His standout performance came against GT where he took three wickets conceding only 15 runs.

Yuzvendra Chahal (RR)

RR’s star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal now occupies the third spot with 12 wickets from seven matches at an economy of 8.34. Chahal stands as the only spinner in contention for the Purple Cap. He is set to face MI on April 22 in Jaipur.

Gerald Coetzee (MI)

The young South African pacer has impressed with 12 wickets from seven matches, albeit with an economy of 9.92. Coetzee's recent three-wicket haul against PBKS on April 18 showcased his potential. He was signed by MI in last year's auction for Rs 5 crore

Sam Curran (PBKS)

English all-rounder Sam Curran has entered contention with 11 wickets from eight matches at an economy of 8.79. Curran's recent performance against GT saw him claim a wicket while conceding 18 runs from two overs. His best figures of 3/28 came against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 30.
