Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Mr. 360, Suryakumar Yadav’s century second Indian Premier League (IPL) century helped the hosts beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by seven wickets at Wankhede Stadium with 16 balls to spare. After skipper Hardik Pandya and Piyush Chawla's three-fers restricted SRH to 173/8, Suryakumar rescued MI from top-order collapse and led them to a comfortable win. The massive win helped MI boost their net run rate (NRR) and rise from the bottom of the points table to the ninth position. SRH's NRR took a massive hit but they stayed in the fourth position.
Head gets second chances
Earlier, Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first. Abhishek Sharma struggled after hitting a couple of boundaries but Travis Head went berserk in the fifth over. He hit debutant Anshul Kamboj for a maximum. He got bowled but off a no ball. 19 runs came off Kamboj's second over. Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Abhishek as he edged one to the wicketkeeper. SRH were 56/1 after powerplay overs. Head got another reprieve when he got dropped in Kamboj's next over. Back in side, Mayank Agarwal became his debut IPL wicket. Chawla ended Head's stay at the crease. He departed for a 30-ball 48. Pandya came back into the attack and dismissed Nitish Reddy for a 15-ball 20.
Cummins’ cameo
In Chawla's next over, Heinrich Klaasen got bowled for a single-digit score. Marco Jansen took on Chawla in the 15th over hitting him for a six and a four. Pandya struck twice in the 16th over removing Shahbaz Ahmed and Jansen. Chawla finished his spell with the wicket of Abdul Samad. Impact player Sanvir Singh was sent into bat but Cummins hit the big shots. The skipper's unbeaten 17-ball 35 took SRH to 173/8.
Surya shines after top-order collapse
MI's run chase got off to a fiery start as boundary followed and SRH new-ball bowlers gave extras. Jansen in the second over ened Ishan Kishan's stay at the crease. Cummins bowled a wicket-maiden. He dismissed Rohit Sharma with a length delivery. Naman Dhir failed to score a single run and got out for a nine-ball duck to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. MI were 31/3 in the fifth over. In Cummins' next over, Tilak Varma hit two fours whereas Suryakumar hit a maximum. MI were 52/3 after powerplay overs. In the next over, Suryakumar hit Jansen for two sixes and two fours. At the halfway stage, MI were 84/3 as Cummins came back into the attack and bowled well.
Surya makes it look easy
In the 13th over, Suryakumar reached his half-century from 30 balls. He continued to hit big and made the run chase look easy. Bowlers looked clueless against his might. In the 18th over, he hit T Natarajan for a six to finish the run chase. He remained unbeaten for 102 off 51 balls. On the other end, Varma scored 37 runs from 31 balls in the unbeaten 143-run partnership.
