Suryakumar Yadav's half-century and Jasprit Bumrah's economical three-fer went in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 24 runs. After a batting collapse, Venkatesh Iyer's 70 helped his side set a target of 170. Mitchell Starc finally found form and registered a four-wicket haul as KKR beat MI at Wankhede Stadium after a long gap of 12 years.
KKR suffer batting collapse
Earlier, Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first. Philip Salt departed for a single-digit score to Nuwan Thushara in the first over. Angkrish Raghuvanshi got off the mark with a six. Bumrah started with a two-run over. Raghuvanshi hit another six off Thushara before getting out next ball. In the same over, Shreyas Iyer threw his wicket away. Venkatesh hit a couple of fours off Gerald Coetzee. Pandya introduced hismelf in the fifth over. Sunil Narine welcomed him with a six and got bowled the next ball. KKR lost four wickets for 43 runs. Rinku Singh hit a couple of fours in the same over. After powerplay overs, KKR were 57/4. Piyush Chawla took an easy catch to dismiss Rinku off the first ball of his spell. Rinku departed for another single-digit score. Manish Pandey came to bat as impact player.
Venkatesh, Pandey help KKR post fighting total
Venkatesh and Pandey rebuild the innings. They crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over. Bumrah came back into the attack and Pandey hit him for a four and a six. Venkatesh completed his half-century from 36 balls. Hardik came back into the attack and Pandey hit him for a six. But he missed a chance to score fifty. He departed for a 31-ball 42. Andre Russell hit a first-ball six. Venkatesh hit a six as well before Russell got run out off the last ball off 17th over. Bumrah in the 18th over struck twice to dismiss Ramandeep Singh and Starc. In the penultimate over, Venkatesh hit a six and a four. Bumrah in the final over dismissed Venkatesh off the penultimate delivery. The left-handed batter got bowled after scoring 70 runs from 52 balls including six fours and three sixes.
MI suffer collapse too
Rohit Sharma walked out to bat as impact player. Starc was expensive in his first over getting hit for a four and a six but got rid of Ishan Kishan. Naman Dhir hit a couple of boundaries in the third over. Rohit took on Starc and hit his first six of the innings. Varun Chakaravarthy with his first ball got rid of Dhir who contributed with a run-a-ball 11. Narine continued to dominate Rohit. He departed after scoring 11 runs from 12 balls. This was the eighth time Narine dismissed Rohit. MI were 46/3 after powerplay overs. After two quiet overs, Chakaravarthy struck to dismiss Tilak Varma for a single-digit score. At the halfway stage, the hosts were 67/4.
Surya’s special cut-short, Starc back in form
Narine continue to strike. Nehal Wadhera got bowled for a 11-ball 6. Suryakumar hit Russell for a six. He kept the run chase alive. In the 14th over, he hit Arora for three fours and a six. He reached his fifty from 30 balls. Russell came back into the attack and got Suryakumar's wicket. He scored 56 runs from 35 balls including six fours and a couple of sixes. Coetzee hit a six to keep the hopes alive in the 18th over. David, in the penultimate over, hit a six before getting out next ball off a full toss. Starc struck twice in the over to dismiss Chawla and Coetzee to bowl out MI for 145 and help KKR win by 24 runs.
