Former India batter Virender Sehwag has lauded Gujarat Titans' (GT) spin maestro Rashid Khan and opined that the Afghanistan spinner does not put any pressure on himself while batting.
The defending champions started their 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with a win over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets in Ahmedabad on Friday, March 31. Rashid played an important role in the win, scoring in the penultimate over to turn the tide and take the game into their stride.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag said that he believes Rashid's speciality is his ability to not take pressure while batting, adding that the Titans could have lost the game if Rashid gave away his wicket in the penultimate over.
Rashid smashed Deepak Chahar for a six and a four in his first two deliveries, with GT needing 23 runs in the last two overs.
"Rashid Khan's speciality is that he doesn't take any pressure on himself while batting. His mindset is always to score those crucial boundaries and help his team win. Had he got dismissed, Gujarat could have lost the game because while chasing 15-16 in the final over, the pressure is always on the batting side," said Sehwag.
The batter also proposed that GT send Rahul Tewatia higher in their batting order, especially after Hardik Pandya lost his wicket. Tewatia scored the winning runs for GT after a slow start. "Gujarat could have thought of sending Tewatia after Hardik's wicket as being a leftie, it would have been easy for him to play with the spin and also hit sixes as Tewatia has that experience in domestic cricket," Sehwag added.
He added that GT needs to look at their left-hand-right-hand combination, adding that David Miller's return should help fix that issue. Miller is currently representing his national side as they're facing the Netherlands in a two-match ODI series.
"They need to look at the left-hand-right-hand combination, which will only get better once Miller is back in the middle order. They also need to learn that a set batter has to finish the game," said Sehwag.
