‘It's a frustration watching from home’: England’s Sam Curran ‘gutted’ not to take part in IPL 2022

Young English bowler Sam Curran had played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the last three seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). But Curran decided not to take part in the 2022 edition of IPL due to an injury.

The 23-year-old English pacer recently opened up on missing IPL. The left-arm pacer is ‘gutted’ to miss the ongoing season of IPL but he also admits that it ‘was probably the best decision.’

Curran speaks

"I'm gutted not to be there. It's a frustration watching from home," Curran, who played for CSK, told ESPNcricinfo.

“I wanted to go (into the auction) but I didn't at the end – which was probably the best decision. Looking back, IPL probably came a little bit too soon.

“I definitely want to go back (to the IPL) at some stage because you learn so much about your T20 game there: it's a tournament when you live and breathe cricket. You go down for breakfast every day and you're sitting with superstars, sitting down and chatting about the game," Curran explained.

Previously, Curran had conveyed that he will not be taking part in IPL 2022 in order to focus on his rehabilitation.

“It was agreed that sadly I should not enter the IPL auction this year and to focus on my rehabilitation. I’m back in the nets and feeling great so hope to be back soon, Wishing everyone all the best for the tournament. I look forward to starting the season with @surreycricket,” Curran had earlier written on his official Twitter account.

The Northampton-born pacer had suffered a back injury during the second leg of last season’s IPL, in October 2021.

Stats and numbers

In IPL, Curran played in 32 matches and picked up 32 wickets at an economy of 9.21. On the other hand, he scored 337 runs at an average of 22.47. Curran scored two half centuries in IPL.

He made his IPL debut back in 2019 against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Notably, his last IPL match was also against RR. Apart from CSK, Curran had previously represented Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL. He was roped in by the Punjab-based franchise for an amount of Rs 7.2 crores.
