Mumbai Indians (MI) have replaced injured England left-arm fast bowler Tymal Mills by South African batter Tristan Stubbs for the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Mills has injured his ankle which led to him getting ruled out of the ongoing season.
Interestingly, Mills has been replaced by a wicketkeeper-batter who had a base price of Rs 20 lakh. The Rohit Sharma-led franchise did not go for a replacement overseas fast bowler in place of Mills as they have managed just one win from nine games.
The 21-year-old Stubbs is an explosive batter who has scored 506 runs from 17 T20s at an average of 38.92 including three half-centuries. The right-handed batter has hit more sixes than fours. He has a strike rate of 157.14. Also, his strike rate in T20 slog overs is 221.29 which is only second to former South Africa cricketer AB de Villiers (225.05) for batters who have played 100 deliveries or less.
The 29-year-old played five games for MI in IPL 2022. The southpaw took five wickets at an average of 31.18 and conceded runs at an economy rate of 9.85 runs per over. Mills was picked for Rs 1.50 crore at the mega auctions after a mini-bidding war with Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
In their previous game, MI ended their record losing streak with a win over Rajasthan Royals (RR). As MI have no chance of reaching the playoffs, they may try out young talent in their next clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
