Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) star opener Abhishek Sharma's explosive best was on full on display in the IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Despite captain Ishan Kishan losing the toss, the Sunrisers got off to a blistering start in the powerplay. Abhishek and Travis Head combined for a dominant 75-run opening partnership, though the hosts suffered a late-powerplay setback by losing two wickets on the final two deliveries of the sixth over.
Abhishek was undoubtedly the star of the afternoon, racing to a half-century in just 15 deliveries, the fastest of his IPL career. He eventually fell to Jamie Overton after scoring a brilliant 59 runs off just 22 balls, an aggressive knock that featured six boundaries and four sixes.
Abhishek Sharma run riot with 15-ball fifty
This remarkable innings etched Abhishek’s name into the history books as he became the first player in Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise history to register a 15-ball fifty, surpassing the previous record held jointly by Travis Head and the world’s number one T20I batter. Furthermore, this effort stands as the second joint-quickest half-century against the Chennai Super Kings in IPL history, matching the 15-ball feat achieved earlier this season by 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during a Rajasthan Royals victory over the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side.

The southpaw continues to redefine aggressive batting in the IPL, recording his sixth career fifty in under 20 balls—a feat unmatched by any other player in the league's history. No other cricketer has reached this milestone more than five times. This achievement further cements his dominance, building on his performance earlier this season when he surpassed Nicholas Pooran’s previous record of four such fifties.
SRH post challenging total of 194/9
Looking at the broader T20 format, Abhishek has now hit ten fifties in fewer than 20 balls, becoming the first player in history to achieve this specific milestone. His consistency in this regard is unparalleled, as no other player in the history of the shortest format has managed to reach the 20-ball fifty mark more than six times. Furthermore, this innings marked the fourth time in his T20 career that he has smashed a fifty in 15 balls or less, a record he holds outright. This achievement puts him well ahead of the competition, with the likes of Sooryavanshi, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell being the only others to have accomplished this feat even twice.
