The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has gone from strength to strength. He ruled out the possibility of him being just a one-season Indian Premier League (IPL) wonder. In the ongoing edition, Sooryavanshi has taken down the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood. On April 10, he turned the game in Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) favour within the powerplay overs only. Chasing 202, he unleashed havoc on RCB bowlers including Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Following his 26-ball 78, current Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Dhumal has joined the list of people who want him to make his India debut. Dhumal wants Sooryavanshi to become the youngest Indian player to make his debut at the international stage for senior side.
"What an amazing batting display by Vaibhav Suryavanshi this @IPL 2026 season. This prodigy certainly deserves to debut for Team India @BCCI as the youngest given his performances,” Dhumal wrote on X.
“It’s rare you get a chance to pick up someone so talented and sooooo young too. Certainly deserves his name to be recorded as the youngest debutant for India,” he added.
Can Sooryavanshi make his T20I debut in Zimbabwe?
If Sooryavanshi continues to thrash opponents in the IPL like he has been, it will create a good headache for the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Like Abhishek Sharma made his T20I debut after T20 World Cup 2024, Sooryavanshi can make his T20I debut against Zimbabwe as well. India are known for sending a second-string side to Zimbabwe. Considering the busy schedule India have, Sooryavanshi may get the maiden India call-up. However, earlier this month, a report suggested that Sooryavanshi and his Under-19 World Cup 2026-winning teammate Ayush Mhatre are set to play a red-ball Intra COE tournament after the conclusion of IPL 2026.
Sooryavanshi gets hold of orange cap
The teenager currently holds the orange cap with 200 runs from four innings at an average of 50 and strike rate of 266.67. He is ahead of his Royals' teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel who have 183 runs and 176 respectively from four innings each.
Sooryavanshi's next challenge will be an inexperienced Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling lineup on April 13.
