Delhi Capitals (DC) endured their sixth loss of the season in the ongoing IPL 2026, by failing to defend 156 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday, May 5 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. DC skipper Axar Patel failed again to give an impactful performance against the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side, scoring only two runs with the bat in a tough situation.
Axar Patel backed by DC head coach
DC head coach Hemang Badani has backed Axar Patel amid horrible form with the bat in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, saying that left-arm spin all-rounder has a lot of experience of playing at the highest level and he knows how to make a strong comeback after a big setback. The DC head coach further said that Axar has won two T20 WC titles and knows how to handle tough times.
"With Axar, I think it’s again a question of somebody who’s (trying to find form). There are people who have played cricket at the highest level – like he’s a double World Cup winner. You work with them and you give them the faith. They have the faith in themselves in the sense that they have played the game," said Badani
While speaking further, Badani added he is confident that Axar would make a strong comeback and perform well with the bat. Meanwhile, the former India player praised the DC skipper for his bowling performances.
"They have figured out the ways and means of going through the grind, struggles and how you come back. They’ve done it all and I have the faith that he’ll come good. He’s had a wonderful time with the ball and those figures, I would take it on any given day,” Badani added.
Axar Patel's struggle in IPL 2026
In the ongoing season, Axar Patel has clearly struggled to find form with the bat for DC, scoring only 33 runs at an average of 5.50 across seven innings with a disappointing strike rate of 89.18.
With the ball the story remains the same, as Axar only clinched eight wickets in nine innings with a relatively higher economy rate of 8.54. It will be interesting to see if Axar can make a comeback after struggling in the first 10 games.
