The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted their first-ever IPL title on Tuesday by defeating the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final of the 2025 season held at the Narendra Modi stadium. Following the six-run win in Ahmedabad, a victory parade and felicitation ceremony was announced to take place in Bengaluru to celebrate the side's first IPL triumph. The ceremony was set to take place at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium.
A stampede took place outside the M. Chinnaswamy stadium
However, what was supposed to be a day of celebration and joy turned into an absolute nightmare as packed streets outside the stadium lead to a stampede which ended up taking the lives of 11 people and left many injured as well. Despite the horror scenes outside, the ceremony inside the stadium wasn't stopped and mostly went as planned.
This incident will definitely leave a sour taste in the mouths of the people in Bengaluru and will also put a massive stain on RCB's first-ever IPL triumph.
Following the tragedy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference and announced a compensation worth INR 10 lakh to the families of all the 11 victims. He further stated that the local authorities and the Karnataka State Cricket Association didn't expect the crowd to be so big and thus, weren't able to manage the event properly. “We, or the Karnataka State Cricket Association, did not expect such a huge crowd,” he said.
The CM paid a visit to the injured in the hospitals that they were admitted in. He also announced that the state will provide them with free treatment.
The Bengaluru-based franchise also reacted to the tragedy and mourned the loss of lives, who had took to the streets just to celebrate the side's victory. In a latest statement, they also announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh to families of the victims through a social media post.
Additionally, they also announced the setting up of a fund called RCB Cares in order to support the people that got injured due to the stampede. In the end, this incident is something that must never happen again and events like these must be properly managed by the authorities if they do take place again.
