PBKS hopes of making the IPL 2026 playoffs suffered another major setback after the team slumped to its fifth consecutive defeat.

Despite the string of defeats, Iyer maintained that the team remains focused on its remaining matches and is still hopeful of making a late playoff push.

Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) hopes of making the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoffs suffered another major setback after the team slumped to its fifth consecutive defeat on Thursday, May 14, against the Mumbai Indians (MI). After winning the toss, MI’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah opted to bowl first and managed to restrict PBKS to 200 runs.

Despite crossing the 200-run mark, Punjab failed to defend the total as Mumbai chased it down comfortably, courtesy of a dominant unbeaten knock from Tilak Varma.

Shreyas Iyer remains optimistic despite PBKS’ poor run

Following the defeat, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted that the loss was difficult to digest but refrained from blaming any particular phase of the game. The Indian batter credited Tilak Varma for his exceptional innings while also appreciating Azmatullah Omarzai’s late contribution with the bat.

"Tough pill to swallow. Don't want to pinpoint a situation. It was a great game of cricket. He (Tilak) played an amazing knock, and manoeuvred the field nicely - so credit to him," Iyer said after the game.

The PBKS captain also highlighted Omarzai’s impact lower down the order, stating that the Afghan all-rounder shifted the momentum when Punjab looked set for a much lower total.

"(On Omarzai) At a point, we were looking at 170-180, and he simply changed the momentum towards us. Getting to 200 was a commendable performance," he added.

Despite the string of defeats, Shreyas Iyer maintained that the team remains focused on its remaining matches and is still hopeful of making a late playoff push.

"Definitely excited about the next opportunity. An afternoon game and we need to win two out of two - can't wait to play (those matches)," he concluded.

Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75 powers MI to crucial win

PBKS posted a competitive total of 200 runs in their 20 overs after several batters made useful contributions. Opener Prabhsimran Singh led the charge with a blistering 57 off 32 deliveries, while Azmatullah Omarzai provided the finishing touch with a quickfire 38 off 17 balls.

In reply, MI started positively but lost wickets at regular intervals. Ryan Rickelton scored 48 off 23 balls, while Rohit Sharma managed 25 off 26 deliveries before departing. Naman Dhir also failed to make an impact, scoring just nine runs.

However, man of the match Tilak Varma anchored the chase brilliantly with an unbeaten 75 off 33 deliveries. The left-hander stitched together a rapid 56-run partnership in just 20 balls with Will Jacks, who remained unbeaten on 25 off 10 balls. MI eventually sealed the match by six wickets with one ball to spare.
