Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced off against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their fourth match of the IPL 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. While Sanju Samson headlined the innings with a brilliant century, young Ayush Mhatre provided vital support with a composed half-century. However, Mhatre's departure from the crease was highly unusual, as he returned to the pavilion without the Delhi Capitals actually taking his wicket.
Why did Ayush Mhatre retire out during CSK vs DC clash?
In a bold tactical move during the 17th over, the CSK management decided to "retire out" Mhatre while he was unbeaten on 59. This strategic maneuver was designed to maximize the scoring potential of the final overs by bringing the explosive Shivam Dube to the crease. The gamble paid off immediately, as Dube validated the team's faith by bludgeoning 20 runs off just 10 deliveries, including two boundaries and a towering six.
Thanks to these aggressive contributions, Chennai Super Kings posted their highest total of the season, finishing at 212/2. The foundation was laid by an opening stand of 62 between Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Although Gaikwad struggled to find his rhythm and fell for 18, Mhatre and Samson shifted the momentum into overdrive with a massive 113-run partnership that dismantled the Delhi bowling attack.

The undisputed star of the night was Sanju Samson, who finished unbeaten with a magnificent 115. This landmark innings marked his first century in yellow and secured his place in the franchise's record books as the only wicketkeeper-batter to ever score a hundred for CSK in the history of the IPL. With a formidable target on the board, the defending champions have put themselves in a prime position to secure their first victory of the 2026 campaign.
