Story Highlights:

PBKS's playoff hopes took a massive dent after losing to RCB on May 17

However, PBKS are still mathematically in contention to make it to last four

Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered a 23-run defeat at the hands of defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to put their IPL 2026 playoff hopes in jeopardy. Chasing RCB’s formidable total of 222/4 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, PBKS fell short, managing to score only 199/8 in their allotted 20 overs, which marked their sixth straight defeat.

PBKS' playoff hopes takes big hit after RCB jolt

This loss in front of their home crowd marks a worrying trend for PBKS, as it represents their sixth consecutive defeat in this year's tournament. Despite this prolonged slump, the team miraculously hangs onto fourth place in the IPL 2026 points table, holding 13 points from their 13 matches.

However, sitting in the top four at the conclusion of match 61 does not guarantee Punjab a playoff spot at the end of the league stage. Their position remains incredibly fragile and highly dependent on the outcomes of rival matches over the next 24 hours.

The slide could begin as early as Sunday night, as PBKS will drop to fifth place if the Rajasthan Royals defeat the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. They could slip even further to sixth place on Monday, May 18, if the Chennai Super Kings manage to beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their respective 13th league fixture.

 PBKS' playoff qualification scenarios

Conversely, if both the Royals and Super Kings lose their upcoming games, Punjab will retain their fourth-place standing. Ultimately, despite enduring a painful six-match losing streak, the Punjab Kings remain very much alive in the intensely competitive race for the IPL 2026 playoffs.

PBKS' path to the IPL 2026 playoffs remains clear but narrow. To secure a spot in the top four and feature in the post-season, they must win their final league match against the Lucknow Super Giants. Additionally, they will need external results to go their way, specifically requiring that no more than three other franchises finish the league stage with 15 or more points.

However, the stakes are absolute for the final fixture. If Shreyas Iyer’s men suffer a defeat against LSG at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday, May 23, their playoff hopes will be instantly dashed. A loss will guarantee a finish outside the top four, condemning the franchise to miss out on tournament qualification for the second consecutive season.
