Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a busy day at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, adding some big players in their ranks. They acquired wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan for Rs 11.25 crore, pacers Mohammed Shami and Harshal Patel for Rs10 crore and Rs8 crore respectively, and spinner Rahul Chahar for Rs 3.2 crore. Not just this, SRH also acquired Abhinav Manohar for Rs 3.2 crore, Adam Zampa for Rs 2.4 crore, and Atharva Taide for Rs30 lakhs to bolster their squad for the upcoming season of the glitzy league.
But it was Ishan Kishan's signing which drew everyone's attention. Ishan Kishan's former franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) had to let him despite having the Right-to-Match (RTM) card option. Ishan had to take a pay cut of 16 per cent from his previous price. Notably, MI spent Rs 15.25 crore on Kishan in IPL 2022 auction.
Why didn't MI use RTM card to re-sign Ishan Kishan in IPL 2025 mega auction?
Despite a bidding war between Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings, it was SRH who secured his services of Kishan with a late bid.
MI were unable to exercise their RTM card due to IPL retention rules. Each franchise was allowed to retain a maximum of six players, including RTM cards, but only five of them could be capped players. Mumbai Indians had already retained their five capped players, leaving no room to use RTM for Kishan.
Mumbai Indians still have the option to use their one remaining RTM card for an uncapped player, such as Anshul Kamboj or Nehal Wadhera. They chose not to bid on any players in the first three slots of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, they did participate in the bidding for Ishan Kishan, going up to Rs 3 crore before eventually conceding to Royal Challengers Bangalore's higher bid.

Ishan Kishan's IPL journey began in 2016 when he was picked up by Gujarat Lions for Rs 35 lakh. Impressed by his talent, Mumbai Indians acquired him in the 2018 auction, and he has been a key member of their team ever since. Despite being released ahead of the 2022 season, Mumbai Indians re-signed him for a significant amount of Rs 15.25 crore. In his IPL career spanning 105 matches, Kishan has amassed 2644 runs at an impressive strike rate of 135.87. He has also made a notable impact in international cricket, scoring 796 runs in 32 T20Is at a strike rate of 124.37.
