Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians' horrendous campaign at the Indian Premier League 2026 had to end with some tough calls from the team management. Reportedly, Hardik Pandya‘s turbulent reign as the captain of five-time champions appears to be coming to an end. Following a disastrous tournament in which the franchise suffered 10 defeats in 14 matches to finish a dismal ninth on the points table, MI management is reportedly preparing for a massive squad overhaul. This disappointing campaign also extended Mumbai's title drought to six long years, prompting leadership to reconsider the team's direction starting from the very top.

Hardik Pandya to be sacked as MI captain
According to a report by The Indian Express, which cited conversations with at least three individuals within the MI setup, Hardik is highly likely to be stripped of the captaincy ahead of the next cycle. Furthermore, the report indicates that management's upcoming review won't just stop at a change in leadership, as a formal discussion regarding his overall place in the playing squad is also actively on the cards. Not just that, even his place in team's playing XI is in jeopardy.
“There were enough signs during the season that the team management wasn’t keen to retain him as captain. There is a clear buzz in the camp. The coaching staff was very clear in their message to the senior players that wherever they play, they need to be coachable. There were many instances where the coaching staff recommended something which was backed by data but players didn’t follow it. “There will be serious introspection and discussion in the coming days. Every option would be weighed. Many questions need to be addressed. Going ahead, can Hardik be the captain? Does he stay in the team just as a player?,” a source as quoted by Indian Express.
The teams that successfully navigated their way to the playoffs this year—namely the Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, completely redefined modern T20 batting. Their top orders consistently scoring at more than 10 runs per over forced a paradigm shift in the tournament. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Gujarat Titans demonstrated the immense value of relying on experienced, world-class bowling units featuring the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Kagiso Rabada, and Mohammed Siraj. In stark contrast, the Mumbai Indians, despite boasting arguably the most recognizable names in the competition, looked entirely out of sync with the evolution of the modern game.
This tactical disconnect was vividly reflected in the individual statistics, as not a single Mumbai Indians player featured in the race for the prestigious Orange or Purple Caps. Their top-performing batsman, Ryan Rickelton, finished a distant 17th among the tournament's top run-getters, while their primary leg-spinner, Allah Ghazanfar, sat 14th on the leading wicket-takers list. For a star-studded squad containing proven international match-winners at virtually every single position, these underwhelming numbers remain incredibly difficult to justify.
Compounding these on-field struggles is Pandya's deeply complicated relationship with the MI faithful. Originally scouted and developed by Mumbai, he was released by the franchise in 2022, after which he moved to the Gujarat Titans and immediately led them to an IPL title as captain. His high-profile return to MI ahead of the 2024 season was met with intense friction, as he replaced the beloved Rohit Sharma as captain. But since then, everything has gone south for the Paltans, who are now exploring other options for the leadership role.
