Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have suffered a major blow just a week before the season opener, with young pacer Harshit Rana ruled out of the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Rana sustained a ligament strain in his right knee during a T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa and underwent surgery in February. His absence leaves a significant void in the KKR attack, especially as the team is already managing the fitness of Matheesha Pathirana. While Sri Lanka Cricket has recently declared Pathirana fit and granted him an NOC, he still needs to pass a Physical Performance Test once he joins the squad before he can be cleared for match action.
Harshit Rana to miss entire IPL 2026
To address these vacancies, the KKR management has been evaluating several domestic fast-bowling options at Eden Gardens this week. Quicks including Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Sandeep Warrier, and KM Asif have all been seen training and undergoing trials. The franchise aims to finalize their replacements before the squad departs for Mumbai on March 25 to prepare for their first match against the Mumbai Indians on March 29.

The injury crisis is not unique to Kolkata, as several other franchises are grappling with the loss of key international stars. Chennai Super Kings will be without Nathan Ellis, and the Rajasthan Royals have lost star all-rounder Sam Curran to a groin injury. Additionally, Cricket Australia’s precautionary workload management means that Mitchell Starc (DC), Josh Hazlewood (RCB), and Pat Cummins (SRH) are all expected to miss the early stages of the tournament. In a major leadership shift for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ishan Kishan has been named the stand-in captain to lead the side in Cummins' absence.

KKR head coach on Harshit Rana's replacement
Meanwhile, KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar was asked about Rana's replacement. Nayar said that he has his sights on couple of players who fits the frame as Rana's replacement which KKR will announce in couple of days.
“It is a big blow because Harshit Rana has been an integral part of this team for the last couple of seasons, also the championship season. Over the last year, he’s really grown as a cricketer. We will always miss Harshit Rana, it’s not easy to replace him. But over the last few days, we’ve looked at a few bowlers as to who fits in and who can do that role to the best of their prowess. Hopefully, we’ll take a call in a couple of days,” Nayar said at the pre-season press conference.
KKR will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign opener against Mumbai Indians on March 29.
