Despite managing a painful foot injury, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy is refusing to take a seat on the bench. Following KKR’s crucial victory over the Mumbai Indians, a win that kept their Indian Premier League playoff hopes alive, team assistant coach Shane Watson revealed on Wednesday, May 20, that the mystery spinner is completely willing to push through the pain barrier to contribute to his side's campaign.
Varun Chakaravarthy undeterred by injury
Chakravarthy’s grit was on full display at the Eden Gardens, where he bowled his full quota of four overs against Mumbai Indians despite suspicions that he is carrying a fracture. His highly economical spell played a pivotal role in maintaining relentless pressure on the MI batting line-up, which collapsed early in the powerplay after losing four wickets for a mere 41 runs.
He's obviously playing through a bit of pain: Shane Watson on Varun Chakaravarthy
The injury dates back to an earlier match against the Delhi Capitals, where Chakravarthy sustained a painful impact injury that was later diagnosed as a hairline fracture. Despite the physical setback, his determination to play through the discomfort underscores his vital role in KKR's bowling arsenal as they push for a playoff spot.
“All I do know is he's obviously playing through a bit of pain at the moment, which just shows how brave he is, and how much he wants to be here to be able to contribute for KKR. He’s still bowling beautifully. It's been brilliant to see the turnaround from the first few games of the season to the impact he's been able to consistently have every single game,” Watson said in the post-match press conference.
Despite the lingering pain of the injury, Varun Chakravarthy has consistently made himself available for selection as KKR attempts one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the IPL 2026 season. Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, the side has undergone a remarkable transformation, bouncing back from a disastrous start to the campaign to win six of their last seven matches.

A massive catalyst for this resurgence has been Varun's return to form. After struggling to find his rhythm in the early part of the tournament, the mystery spinner rediscovered his touch midway through the season, anchoring the bowling unit and completely transforming KKR’s defensive potency. Assistant coach Shane Watson highly credited Varun's hunger and commitment, emphasizing that the franchise is incredibly fortunate to have a player so willing to prioritize the team's success over personal comfort.
KKR stay alive in playoff contention
Following their crucial victory over the Mumbai Indians, KKR's playoff dreams remain very much alive. If they can manage to defeat the Delhi Capitals in their final league game, they stand a strong chance of sneaking into the top four, provided other results across the league fall in their favor. Regardless of whether they ultimately qualify, KKR’s late-season revival has firmly established itself as one of the defining narratives of IPL 2026. Completely written off by critics after failing to secure a single victory in their opening six matches, the squad has shown immense resilience to claw their way back into the heart of the playoff race.
“We are so lucky to be able to have someone of Varun's skill and also his desperation to be able to be here and want to play for KKR because with the pain that he's managing, he could have easily just said, ‘I don't want to be a part of this, I'm just going to go and rest it.So, we're very fortunate that he's all in and he's done a brilliant job again tonight. We’re very grateful for everything that he continues to do for KKR,’” Watson concluded.
