India's premium fast bowler Mohammed Shami will find his new Indian Premier League home with former champions and runner-up of the IPL 2024 Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise roped him in for an amount of 10 crores. This also comes as a big move as the pacer recently made his comeback to competitive cricket after an injury layback of almost a year.
This bid has also reignited the recent tussle between Shami and former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, which took over the internet. Manjrekar, in his recent remarks, said that Shami will see a dip in price because of the injuries he has been through. However, that did not sit right with the bowler, who replied to those remarks on social media.
Manjrekar and Shami controversy
Manjrekar in his previous remarks on Star Sports stated that Shami's recent injury history would lead to value decline. Shami just made his competitive comeback after missing a year because of an ankle injury. Following the ODI World Cup 2023 final in Australia, Shami had to have surgery.
"There will definitely be interest from teams, but given Shami's injury history—and this recent one took a significant amount of time to recover—there’s always a concern about a potential breakdown during the season. If a franchise invests heavily and then loses him mid-season, their options become limited. This concern might lead to a drop in his price tag," Manjrekar said on Star Sports.
Shami shared an Instagram story which showed that the pacer was not happy with those remarks and said Manjrekar should preserve his knowledge for the future and keep it to himself.
"Baba ki jai hoooooo. Thoda sa gyan apne future k lie bhi bacha loo kaam ayega Sanjay G? Kisi ko future janna ho to sir se mile," Shami posted on his Instagram story.
With 28 wickets from 17 innings at an average of 18.64 and an economy of 8.03, Shami was the highest wicket-taker and the recipient of the purple cap in his final IPL in 2023. As a result, a number of teams will be keeping an eye on the speedster, particularly following an incredible ODI World Cup campaign in which he once again finished as the best wicket-taker with 24
