Story Highlights:

Cooper Connolly became the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history during a debut season with 491 runs in IPL 2026.

PBKS must beat LSG and depend on other results to stay alive in the playoff race.

Punjab Kings star Cooper Connolly achieved a major milestone during the ongoing clash against Lucknow Super Giants in what is a crucial encounter for PBKS’ playoff hopes in the Indian Premier League 2026.

While the already-eliminated LSG have nothing to lose from this contest, Punjab Kings are under massive pressure as a defeat would officially end their playoff hopes.

Amid the high-stakes clash, Connolly added another major achievement to his breakout IPL campaign.

Connolly becomes second-highest run-scorer in debut IPL season

With his latest contribution in the match, Connolly moved to 491 runs in IPL 2026 and entered an elite list featuring some of the biggest debut seasons in IPL history.

The Australian youngster is now the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history during a debut season and trails only fellow Australian and former PBKS legend Shaun Marsh.

Most runs in a debut IPL season

616 - Shaun Marsh (PBKS, 2008)
491 - Cooper Connolly (PBKS, 2026)*
475 - Priyansh Arya (PBKS, 2025)
473 - Devdutt Padikkal (RCB, 2020)
439 - Shreyas Iyer (DD, 2015)

Connolly has been one of the biggest positives for Punjab Kings this season and has consistently delivered under pressure with both attacking strokeplay and maturity beyond his years.

The youngster’s performances have played a massive role in keeping PBKS alive in the playoff race despite their poor second half of the season.

PBKS need victory to stay alive in playoff race

Punjab Kings entered the match against Lucknow Super Giants in a must-win situation.

A victory would take PBKS to 15 points and keep their qualification hopes alive heading into the final round of league-stage fixtures.

However, even if Punjab win this game, their playoff qualification will still depend on other results.

The biggest match they would be tracking is Rajasthan Royals versus Mumbai Indians.

If Rajasthan Royals win that clash, PBKS will be knocked out immediately as RR would move to 16 points.

Punjab would also hope Kolkata Knight Riders either lose to Delhi Capitals or fail to improve their net run rate significantly.

Despite a disastrous second half of the season, PBKS still remain mathematically alive in the race for the final playoff spot.
