Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill did not hold back while reflecting on his team’s disappointing fielding effort after their 29-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

After being asked to bat first, KKR came out aggressively and piled up a massive 247/2 on the board. Finn Allen led the charge with a blistering 93 off just 35 deliveries, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi smashed 82 off 44 balls. Cameron Green also added late fireworks with a quickfire 52 from 28 deliveries.

Shubman Gill slams GT’s fielding after costly dropped chances

Gill admitted that GT let the game slip through poor fielding and multiple dropped catches, which made life extremely difficult for the bowlers on a batting-friendly surface.

"Looking at the wicket, I thought 200-210 was par score. We dropped too many catches, and it wasn't easy for the bowlers. The pitch was good. The ones were stopping and sticking. I feel we did well to get where we did," Gill said after the match.

The GT skipper further stressed that the team simply did not deserve to win after putting down crucial opportunities in the field.

"No concerns, but our fielding could have been much better. Dropping three sitters, I don't think we deserved to win this one. Best to have a game like this now rather than in the qualifiers. Rest and recover for a couple of days. Travel back to Ahmedabad, and see how the wicket behaves," he added.

Gill and Buttler fight hard but GT fall short in massive chase

Despite the daunting target, Gujarat Titans began positively in the chase with Sai Sudharsan playing another attacking knock before being forced off the field due to an injury after scoring 53 off 28 balls.

GT’s innings suffered another setback when Nishant Sindhu departed for just one run. However, Shubman Gill kept the chase alive with a superb 85 off 49 deliveries, while Jos Buttler contributed 57 off 35 balls.

Even though the duo fought hard, Gujarat eventually finished 29 runs short. Following the defeat, GT remain second on the points table, although their Net Run Rate took a slight hit. Meanwhile, KKR climbed to seventh place with 11 points. GT is now set to face CSK at Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday, May 21 while KKR will face MI on May 20 at Eden Gardens.
