Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) found themselves in familiar trouble during the powerplay against Gujarat Titans (GT), marking a rare departure from their usual stability this season. Typically, RCB top order has been adept at preserving wickets during the first ten overs, with their only other major collapse occurring earlier in the tournament against the Rajasthan Royals.
Virat Kohli clashes with umpire over Rajat Patidar dismissal
Despite several batters finding their rhythm early in Ahmedabad, the team struggled to convert those starts into substantial scores. The lineup faced a sudden mid-order slide as established players like Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Tim David were sent back to the dugout in quick succession. While Kohli initially looked set for another masterclass, punishing Kagiso Rabada with a flurry of early boundaries—the veteran pacer eventually held his nerve to dismiss the legendary opener in his following over.

The highlight of the fielding effort came from Jason Holder, who pulled off one of the most spectacular catches of the season to dismiss the RCB skipper. After Rajat Patidar had launched Arshad Khan for a towering six, he attempted a lofted glance off the very next delivery. The ball spiraled high into the night sky toward a vacant area of the field, forcing Holder to sprint in from square leg to intercept it.
Displaying remarkable athleticism and focus, the tall West Indian settled perfectly under the swirling ball. Holder managed to secure the catch firmly within his massive reach, maintaining full control of the ball even as he tumbled to the turf. Although the ball came close to the grass as he regained his balance, he ensured it remained cleanly in his grasp, completing a dismissal that shifted the momentum firmly in favor of the Titans.

The dismissal of Rajat Patidar sparked immediate controversy when Jason Holder appeared to slide the ball onto the turf after completing the catch. Despite a heated reaction from the RCB dugout, including a visibly frustrated Virat Kohli—the umpires upheld the decision. The officials ruled that Holder’s fingers were firmly underneath the ball and that he had maintained sufficient control in the air long enough for the catch to be considered complete before the ball made contact with the ground.

The tension escalated on the sidelines as head coach Andy Flower and Virat Kohli expressed their dissatisfaction. Kohli was seen in an animated discussion with the fourth umpire, a move that could potentially damage RCB’s standing in the Fairplay points table. Furthermore, the veteran batter’s conduct may invite disciplinary scrutiny from the match referee as the tournament organizers look to maintain a strict code of behavior.
Beyond his fielding heroics, Holder proved equally lethal with the ball in hand. Entrusted with a second spell by captain Shubman Gill immediately after his controversial catch, he struck with his very first delivery. By dismissing an out-of-form Jitesh Sharma, Holder effectively dismantled the RCB middle order, capping off a masterclass in all-round performance.
