England's Harry Brook became the first overseas batter to be banned from playing in two Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons as he pulled out of the tournament after getting picked by Delhi Capitals (DC). IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has pointed out that it messes up with a franchise's strategy and gameplan.
"Teams pick players auction with a particular strategy in mind. In case a player withdraws from the tournament without a genuine reason, it changes the whole gameplan of the impacted and also affects the tournament," Dhumal told PTI.
The rule was introduced after various overseas players pulled out of IPL if they did not get a desired amount. The, they would appear in the mini-auction to get a hefty amount.
No support from teammates and former captains
The ban on Brook has not been considered harsh by his teammates Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid. Moeen will represent Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025. Former England captain Michael Vaughan and former Australia captain Michael Clarke as well.
DC acquired Brook's services for Rs 6.25 crore. He had pulled out of IPL 2024 after getting picked by DC in mini-auction as well. The Axar Patel-led side is yet to name the Englishman's replacement for the season.
Brook's apology to Delhi Capitals
He shared a post on social media on the day of ICC Champions Torphy 2025 final. He apologised to DC and their fans for pulling out of the season.
"I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters," Brook said in a statement.
"It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date," he added.
Meanwhile, Brook is likely to succeed Jos Buttler as captain in the white-ball formats. Brook has captain Northern Superchargers in the Hundred competition as well.
