Kapil Dev wants India cricketers to prioritise playing for India over IPL

The persistent debate surrounding whether national team commitments should take precedence over the financial attractions of franchise T20 leagues has recently intensified. Weighing in on this ongoing debate, India's legendary all-rounder and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev came up with a clear-cut response.

Kapil Dev settles national duty vs IPL money debate

Addressing the growing trend of players seemingly prioritizing lucrative leagues like the IPL over international duties, Kapil Dev clearly articulated his perspective. While acknowledging that the final decision rests with each individual player, he stressed that representing the country should always remain a player's greatest honour, regardless of the undeniable allure and financial benefits provided by domestic T20 tournaments.

'Playing for India is more important than the IPL'

"I think every individual is different. Yes, everyone loves money and some players might give priority to the league. But I still feel that playing for India is more important than the IPL, but like I said everyone is entitled to their own opinions, they have their own thought process. So, good luck to them," the legendary cricketer said at the launch of The 72, the League, a PGTI event in Delhi, as quoted by Mykhel.

How franchise cricket scripted West Indies cricket's decline?

The 66-year-old's remarks are timely, coinciding with a period where franchise cricket heavily dictates global player availability. The West Indies have been particularly vulnerable to this shift, over the last decade, numerous top Caribbean athletes have consistently chosen global T20 leagues over international commitments. This trend has severely compromised Cricket West Indies, often forcing them to field understrength teams in major bilateral series and ICC events, which has been a major factor in the decline of West Indies cricket.

The ripple effect of prioritizing franchise commitments is now becoming apparent, albeit on a smaller scale, in Indian cricket. It has been observed that some players manage their workloads strategically, occasionally skipping national duty to ensure they are fully fit for the highly lucrative IPL season. Cases where cricketers opt out of bilateral assignments or national training camps to focus solely on recovery before the IPL have generated controversy regarding professional priorities.
