The Karnataka government has officially greenlit the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as the home venue for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during the IPL 2026. This approval brings much-needed clarity following a period of intense uncertainty regarding the stadium's future as a host site. The hesitation stemmed from the tragic stampede that occurred during RCB’s title victory celebrations last year, an incident that resulted in 11 fatalities and prompted a rigorous safety review.

The final decision was reached during a high-level meeting chaired by Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar. This session brought together an Expert Committee featuring representatives from the RCB franchise, DNA Event Management, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). According to KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya, the committee presented comprehensive reports confirming the stadium's operational readiness and its full compliance with updated safety and infrastructure standards.
“During the meeting, the Expert Committee presented its report outlining the preparedness and compliance measures undertaken at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee and after reviewing the arrangements in detail, the Hon’ble Home Minister has formally accorded approval for the conduct of the upcoming IPL matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru,” Mruthyunjaya said in a statement.
RCB to take on SRH in IPL 2026 opener
The 19th season of the IPL is set to kick off on March 28, featuring an opening clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The launch of the season will be a major spectacle, headlined by the official IPL opening ceremony and a special RCB Unboxing event, which has become a hallmark tradition for the franchise and its fans.
Regarding the venue logistics, RCB has requested clearance to host five of its seven home fixtures at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The remaining two home matches are scheduled to be played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, as the team balances its schedule across different regions.
“Our special thanks are also due to Shri Sreemant Kumar Singh, Member Secretary of the Expert Committee and Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, for his proactive coordination and for ensuring that all safety, security and operational aspects were comprehensively evaluated. KSCA further expresses its sincere appreciation to all the distinguished members of the Expert Committee and the officials associated with the Expert Committee and its sub-committees, whose careful assessment and constructive recommendations have been instrumental in enabling this important decision,” the release read.
