Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced a massive change to their coaching staff for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and have roped in Carl Hopkinson as their new fielding coach. Carl Hopkinson, who is an experienced fielding coach from England, will be taking over the role previously held by James Pamment, who has been a valuable member of the MI coaching staff for the past seven years. Pamment played a crucial role in the Paltan's IPL title triumph in 2019 and 2020.

Carl Hopkinson's brings a wealth of experience to MI as he has been an integral part of the England team's fielding setup for the past seven years. His tenure coincided with England's title triumph including ODI World Cup 2019 and the T20 World Cup 2022. Hopkinson's expertise extends to youth cricket as well. He served as the head fielding coach for the England Under-19 team in the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where they reached the final for the first time since 1998.

"The five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have appointed Englishman Carl Hopkinson as their new fielding coach ahead of IPL 2025. The 43-year-old comes in with a pool of experience, leading the fielding unit of the England men’s cricket team for the past seven years," MI's statement read.

 

"He played an instrumental role in their triumphant ODI World Cup 2019 and T20 World Cup 2022 campaigns. Nicknamed Hoppo, he was also Three Lions’ head fielding coach for the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022, where they finished as the runners-up after reaching the final for the first time since 1998," the statement added.

In addition to the IPL, MI have also made changes to their coaching staff for the ILT20. For the 2025 season, they have brought in Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach and Carl Hopkinson as the fielding coach.

Mhambrey, who recently guided the Indian team to a T20 World Cup victory as their bowling coach, will now be working with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He joins Robin Singh (Head Coach) and Vinay Kumar (Assistant Coach) as part of the coaching team for the ILT20.

Mhambrey and Hopkinson will be replacing Mitchell McClenaghan and James Franklin, who have made significant contributions to the Mumbai Indians franchise and other teams worldwide.

MI, will be gunning for their sixth title in the upcoming season of the IPL, made some big acquisitions in the recently-concluded mega auction in Jeddah. They bought 18 players in the IPL 2025 mega auction to bolster their star-studded squad. The franchise's biggest buy was the veteran Kiwi pacer Trent Boult. Other notable signings included Deepak Chahar, Will Jacks, and Mitchell Santner.
