Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar questioned Punjab Kings' (PBKS) star batter Glenn Maxwell who is yet to prove his mettle in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Manjrekar compared his form to 'Halley's Comet' which is visible every 76 years.
As PBKS lost early wickets, Maxwell walked out to bat in the seventh over of the run chase against Rajasthan Royals on April 5. Maxwell hit one six and three fours but wasn't at his best. Eventually, he was dismissed by Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana. Manjrekar was not happy with Maxwell's batting and made an astronomy reference to explain Australia batter's inconsistency in his IPL career.
“Halley's Comet orbits the sun and is visible from Earth once every 75 years. Just like that, Glenn Maxwell plays one good match in 75 games. It was last seen in 1986, and it will now be spotted in 2061. It's the same case with Maxwell in batting. Glenn Maxwell is Halley’s Comet of Cricket," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.
Navjot Singh Sidhu was in the commentary box as well and he disagreed with Manjrekar. However, he said that Maxwell performs well in one out of 25 games.
As PBKS suffered a collapse, Nehal Wadhera was their lone warrior in the unsuccesful run chase. He smashed three sixes and four fours in his 41-ball 62. He made good use of the reprieve early on in his innings. PBKS managed to post 155/9 and lost to Sanju Samson-led RR by 50 runs.

Maxwell's poor form
Earlier, on his PBKS debut, Maxwell was dismissed for a golden duck by Gujarat Titans (GT) left-arm spinner Ravisrinvasan Sai Kishore. The ball-tracking technology later showed that Maxwell would have been not out had he reveiwed as the ball was missing the stumps. He did not get to bat in the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Maxwell hasn't had form by his side. In the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he scored just 39 runs from three innings. He registered single-digit scores against Sri Lanka and India.

Maxwell's stocks dip
Last year, in the mega auction, Maxwell's stocks declined as he did not generate enough interest among franchises to get a big payday. He was picked for Rs 4.20 crore by PBKS as Ricky Ponting is their head coach. If Maxwell doesn't perform, PBKS have another Australian, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis to replace him in the side.
The veteran Australia batter had a poor run in previous season. For Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he managed to score 52 runs from nine innings at an average of 5.77.
