The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises have submitted a list of unsold Indian Premier League (IPL) players to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). These players could potentially be selected in the upcoming PSL draft.
PSL franchise owners chasing snubbed IPL stars
The scheduling of the PSL 2025 has been affected by the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be held during the traditional PSL window. As a result, the PSL has been pushed to the March-April window, directly clashing with the IPL 2025.
This scheduling conflict poses a big challenge for the PSL. The IPL's immense popularity and brand value often overshadows other leagues, including the PSL. Moreover, many top international players prioritize the IPL over other leagues, further impacting the PSL's player pool.
Despite the challenges posed by the IPL, the PSL is aiming to attract top international talent. Several high-profile players who went unsold in the IPL auctions, such as David Warner, Kane Williamson, Adil Rashid, Alex Carey, Keshav Maharaj, Shai Hope, Daryl Mitchell, Jonny Bairstow, and Akeal Hossain, are being considered by PSL franchises.
As per a PTI report, the PSL team owners have suggested these players, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is in the process of contacting their agents to confirm their availability for the next edition of the league. The PCB aims to secure the participation of these players to enhance the league's competitiveness and attract more viewers.
“The team owners want the PCB to talk to the agents and boards of these players and confirm their availability for the PSL 2025," a source privy to the development told PTI.
PSL franchise owners have expressed their preference for holding the player draft in either London or Dubai. This decision is reportedly inspired by the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) practice of hosting IPL auctions in foreign locations.
PCB is also considering this proposal and may opt to organize the PSL draft in either London or Dubai to attract global attention and potentially secure the participation of top international players.
“The franchise owners are in favour of having the players draft either in London or Dubai as they feel it would improve the brand image of the league," the source added.
The recently concluded IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was a resounding success for the BCCI. The auction witnessed windfall on star players. Notably, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in the history of IPL after Lucknow Super Giants hired him for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore.
Meanwhile, PCB will have to deal with big headache regarding PSL 2025 schedule. PCB has reportedly eyeing a window between April 7 and May 20 to host the PSL 2025. However, this scheduling overlaps with the traditional IPL window, potentially leading to a direct clash between the two leagues.
