Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury which forced him out of the ground

Mumbai Indians (MI) fans suddenly stopped roaring at the Wankhede Stadium when their superstar batter Rohit Sharma was retired hurt during a high-stakes chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their IPL 2026 clash.

Why Rohit Sharma walked off the field in middle of MI's chase vs RCB?

The decision appeared to be triggered by a hamstring injury that visibly hampered the veteran batter's movement. During the sixth over, after seeking medical attention and attempting to play through the discomfort for a few deliveries, Rohit signaled to the dugout that he could no longer continue, allowing Suryakumar Yadav to take his place at the crease.

The timing of the injury was particularly challenging for the home side, who were tasked with chasing a formidable target of 241. Opening alongside South African keeper Ryan Rickelton, Rohit had provided the exact spark Mumbai needed to capitalize on the Powerplay. He had raced to 19 runs off just 13 balls, a knock punctuated by two boundaries and a signature six, before the physical strain became too much to ignore during Rasikh Salam Dar’s over.

While the "retired out" status formally ended this stint at the crease, it does not necessarily mean Rohit’s participation in the match is over. Under the laws of the game, he retains the option to return to the middle at a later stage should his condition improve or the match situation demand it. This tactical withdrawal mirrors a similar act of grit Rohit displayed in a 2022 ODI against Bangladesh, where he temporarily left the field with a thumb injury only to return at number nine and strike a valiant half-century.
