In a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) managed a riveting 11-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 25. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer was the star of the show at the Narendra Modi Stadium, as he delivered a breathtaking knock of 97 runs off 42 balls. His brilliance wasn't limited to his batting but his captaincy acumen was also on full display on the field, ensuring PBKS started their season with a win.
How Shreyas Iyer captaincy masterstroke played a role in PBKS's nail-biting win over GT
Despite the PBKS setting a formidable target of 244 runs for the Titans, the home team put up a strong fight in the middle overs. Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler were particularly explosive, hitting the Punjab bowlers to all parts of the ground. However, the game shifted when Vijaykumar Vyshak was introduced as an impact substitute. In a crucial spell Vyshak conceded just 10 runs in his first two overs, stifling the GT's momentum and ultimately playing a key role in Punjab's victory.
Even after giving away 18 runs in the second-to-last over, the right-arm bowler had done enough to keep the required run rate high, meaning the Titans still needed a daunting 27 runs off the final six deliveries.
Following the PBKS' nail-biting win over GT, head coach Ricky Ponting disclosed that it was actually skipper Shreyas Iyer who suggested bringing in Vijaykumar Vyshak as the impact substitute. In his post-match dressing room address, Ponting specifically acknowledged this strategic move, showering praise on both Iyer for his insightful call and Vyshak for his impactful performance.
“I was sitting there, I was like, they need 13-14 runs an over. (I) Sent the message out to Shreyas, (asking) what do you want to do? He said straight away, just get Vyshak out there. He'll nail a couple of overs at Yorkers and we will close the game. And you were the one that changed the game, so congratulations,” Ponting was heard saying in the dressing room.
Vyshak's IPL journey started with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023, and he continued to play for them in the subsequent season. However, the franchise chose not to retain him, leading to the Punjab Kings acquiring his services for Rs 1.80 crore. Looking ahead, the Punjab Kings will be aiming to maintain their winning streak as they travel to Lucknow to face the Lucknow Super Giants in another away game on April 1. Meanwhile, LSG had a disappointing start to their season earlier this week, suffering a narrow one-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals. On the other hand GT will next take on Mumbai Indians on March 29
