According to Sunil Gavaskar, MI suffers when Rohit Sharma is dismissed during the powerplay, and the opener's shot selection needs some restraint. This season, Rohit has not been playing at his best because the MI veteran has not managed to score a significant amount at the top. Rohit has only amassed 38 runs at an average of 9.5 in 4 games, with a peak score of 17. This occurred during the defeat to RCB, when Rohit appeared to be playing his regular game until being dismissed by Yash Dayal once more on the powerplay. Mumbai has suffered significant losses as a result of Rohit being removed in the first six overs in each of the four games thus far.

Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma

Gavaskar stated that MI will be looking for a strong knock from Rohit in the next games in an interview with JioHotstar during the MI vs RCB match. The Indian great stated that MI will hope Rohit can bat through the powerplay and get a respectable 30 or 40 runs even if he does not score a lot right away.

“Over the next couple of games, they’ll be hoping for a solid knock. Even if he doesn’t get a big score immediately, if he can bat through the power-play into the 8th or 9th over and score a steady 30–40, that will help build confidence."

Any team that Rohit is playing for suffers while he is out in the powerplay, according to Gavaskar. Though his shot selection requires some restraint, the Indian icon believes Rohit has a lot to offer. Gavaskar believes that while Rohit should be aggressive, he should also take calculated risks.

"But when he gets out in the powerplay, it hurts — whether it’s for Mumbai Indians, India, or any team he’s playing for. He has so much to contribute. I believe his shot selection needs a bit of tempering. You have to be aggressive and score as much as possible in the first six overs, but choosing the right risks is key. If he finds that balance, he’ll be back to scoring big runs again,” said Gavaskar.

On April 13, the Mumbai Indians will travel to Delhi to play the Delhi Capitals.
