Indian Premier League (IPL) trade window ahead of the 2027 season has burst into life with a high-profile player swap between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). In a move that sees a significant homecoming, left-arm pace spearhead T. Natarajan has made his way back to Sunrisers Hyderabad, while leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari has moved in the opposite direction to join Delhi Capitals.
Natarajan returns to SRH as DC acquire Zeeshan in big trade before IPL 2027
This early pre-season trade carries massive strategic implications for both franchises, addressing specific roster requirements while highlighting the shifting dynamics in their respective team setups.
The centerpiece of this trade is T. Natarajan's return to the franchise where he became a household name. Natarajan was originally snapped up by the Delhi Capitals for a hefty Rs 10.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega-auction. However, ahead of the 2027 campaign, both franchises and the player agreed to a restructured trade agreement. Natarajan might have returned to his former franchise but the move came at the cost of his pay cut. He moves back to the Men in Orange at a revised fee of Rs 5 crore. This saw him taking a pay cut of Rs 5 crore.
Concurrently, young leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari moves to the Delhi Capitals at his existing valuation of Rs 40 lakh. Ansari, who featured in 10 matches for SRH during the IPL 2025 season, made headlines on his dream IPL debut against none other than Delhi Capitals, where he claimed a stellar 3 for 42, dismissing marquee names like Jake Fraser-McGurk, Faf du Plessis, and KL Rahul.
T. Natarajan’s IPL journey
For Sunrisers Hyderabad, bringing back Natarajan is nothing short of a emotional and tactical coup. Known universally as the 'Yorker King', Natarajan spent five foundational seasons with SRH from 2020 to 2024, establishing himself as one of the most lethal death-over specialists in the tournament.
Natarajan enjoyed his finest IPL campaign in 2024, scalping 19 wickets to finish as SRH's leading wicket-taker. His pinpoint accuracy under pressure played a principal role in driving Sunrisers all the way to the IPL 2024 final.
Across his broader 73-match IPL career, the left-arm seamer has collected 72 wickets at an average of 32.97 and an economy rate of 9.21. His tournament journey began in 2017 with Punjab before shifting to Hyderabad for Rs 40 Lakhs ahead of the 2018 season, though injuries and squad retention kept him sidelined from active playing XIs across 2018 and 2019. SRH secured his services once more at the 2022 mega-auction for Rs 4 crores.
Although signed by Delhi Capitals for a substantial sum of Rs 10.75 crore for IPL 2025, the franchise's overarching bowling plans prompted a re-evaluation, paving the way for his return to SRH.
Talking about his last edition's performance, he took just five wickets in a span of 10 matches for DC.
For SRH, re-acquiring a seasoned Indian fast bowler of Natarajan's caliber stabilises a pace attack that heavily relies on domestic execution, lessening the burden on their overseas speedsters.
Meanwhile, as far as SRH's performance in IPL 2026, they finished third in the league stage with 18 points as they recorded nine victories and five defeats. Their IPL 2026's campaign ended with a 47-run loss to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator.
What does Zeeshan Ansari bring to DC's table?
Transitioning to the capital franchise, Ansari makes the switch after logging 10 appearances during his debut 2025 campaign with Hyderabad. The 26-year-old leg-spinner burst onto the scene in his very first outing by dismantling DC with a three-wicket haul, finishing his maiden season with six scalps. Although Sunrisers kept him on their roster for the 2026 tournament, he spent the entire season warming the bench.
DC are undergoing a massive structural and philosophical transformation following back-to-back title-less campaigns.
DC have endured a frustrating phase in the IPL. Despite flashes of brilliant individual brilliance and strong league-stage phases in previous years, they have continually failed to cross the final hurdle to capture their maiden IPL trophy. Last season's shortcomings prompted the franchise management to critically analyse their squad architecture, leading to calculated moves like trading Natarajan to free up purse value and acquiring cost-effective, high-upside domestic talent like Zeeshan Ansari to bolster their spin department.
DC's radical changes in the coaching setup
The most profound changes for Delhi Capitals have occurred off the pitch, with a complete revamp of their coaching and mentoring staff designed to change their fortunes ahead of IPL 2027.
Yuvraj Singh joins as batting coach: In a blockbuster appointment, legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been named the assistant and batting coach. This marks Yuvraj's maiden formal coaching assignment in the IPL, bringing a wealth of championship-winning experience and aggressive tactical insights into the dressing room.
Bowling & Spin Expertise: Former Sri Lankan pace icon Chaminda Vaas has been brought on board as the bowling coach, while legendary Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra, one of the tournament's all-time leading wicket-takers—has joined the coaching staff to mentor the spin unit.
Sourav Ganguly at the helm: Ganguly continues to anchor the leadership group as Head Coach, focusing on long-term team building.
How did DC fare in IPL 2026?
During the IPL 2026 season, DC experienced another challenging campaign that ultimately ended without a playoff spot. Playing 14 league matches, the Capitals managed 7 wins and 7 losses, finishing the season with 14 points and a negative net run rate of -0.651, which placed them sixth in the final standings. While the team displayed flashes of brilliance, including a record-breaking run chase against Rajasthan Royals and a resounding victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in their final league fixture, their campaign was marred by inconsistency. Defensive bowling lapses and a string of mid-season losses prevented them from breaking into the top four.
