Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody, who coached the Sunrisers Hyderabad to their only IPL triumph back in 2016, believes that the Gujarat Titans (GT) duo of Sai Sudharsan and skipper Shubman Gill are proper batters and can weather down any storm through their technique.
The GT duo carried the side to a comfortable 10-wicket win over DC
The batting pair formed a sensational partnership of 205 runs in GT's clash against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, May 19. This amazing stand helped the Gujarat-based franchise in chasing down the 200-run target without losing any wicket.
"I think the way they dovetail together as an opening pair, they seem to really understand each other's game. One seems to fall in behind the other if one's got off to a flier. So they cover each other, and there seems to be a pattern in that throughout the season. And just their traditional strokeplay," Moody said on ESPNcricinfo Time Out.
"What it shows you is the class of that batting pair. They are proper batters that have the technique that can weather any storm, but also... they have both developed this over time, they have learnt how to move through the gears. They may have only had three gears in previous years, but both of them have five gears they can shift to," he added.
This victory was huge for GT as not only did they win in comprehensive fashion, but the victory also sent them through to the playoffs. They currently stand at the top of the IPL points table, having accumulated 18 points in 12 matches.
Sudharsan and Gill have played a major role in GT's success in the ongoing IPL season, with the former scoring 617 runs and the latter putting up 601 runs. Sudharsan is the current Orange Cap holder and Gill is right behind him at the second spot.
Sudharsan is currently the player with the most fours in the ongoing season. The left-hand batter has smashed a total of 68 boundaries in IPL 2025 so far while on the other hand, Gill has made the ball cross the boundary rope on 54 occasions this season so far. It is safe to say that Sudharsan and Gill are the two biggest catalysts to GT's playoff qualification.
Though the IPL 2022 champions have already secured a place in the playoffs, they still have to play two more matches before their league stage concludes. Firstly, they will be locking horns against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 22 and finally, they will be facing-off against the Chennai Super Kings on May 25. Both of these matches will be played at the Narendra Modi stadium.
