India's World Cup-winner Irfan Pathan recently shared his perspective on the future of MS Dhoni, suggesting that the upcoming IPL season might be the legendary wicketkeeper-batter’s final stint with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Pathan’s comments hint at the end of an era for the franchise, as the legendary wicketkeeper-batter has been the face of the team since the league's inception.
This season might be the last time we see MS Dhoni in the yellow jersey: Irfan Pathan
While talking about Dhoni’s monumental impact on the sport, Pathan noted that imagining the IPL or the CSK lineup without him is a difficult task for fans and analysts alike.
“CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it's tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him. This season, Dhoni will play an important role in bringing everyone together. I'm not sure how many games he will play. But his presence in the dressing room will help a lot. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the leader. But as a group, two or three guys are being groomed for the future. That is where MS Dhoni comes in. I hope he makes a difference," Pathan told Jio Hotstar.

According to Pathan, CSK management is expected to prioritise a strategic and cautious approach regarding Dhoni's physical workload. Given the demands of a full season, Pathan believes the franchise will manage his participation 'step by step' to ensure he remains effective and fit, especially as questions regarding his batting position and availability for every game persist.
'Questions about his fitness, batting position'
Beyond just managing his time on the field, the ultimate goal for the team is to provide their legendary stalwart with the most fitting farewell possible. Pathan suggests that the franchise is highly motivated to secure a record sixth IPL title, aiming to send off the iconic wicketkeeper-batter at the very pinnacle of the sport.
“Questions about his fitness, batting position, and whether he will play all games will still come up. The CSK team management will take it step by step. They will definitely look to give him a perfect farewell by lifting their sixth IPL trophy,” he added.

Dhoni remains one of the most influential figures within CSK organisation, serving as a vital pillar of the franchise's leadership group. His legacy is defined by unparalleled success, having guided the team to five IPL titles during his tenure as captain.
However, the team is looking to bounce back from a challenging previous season, which saw the five-time champions struggle significantly. CSK finished at the bottom of the points table, managing to secure only four victories out of their fourteen matches. This rare lapse in performance has heightened the stakes for the upcoming season as the franchise seeks to reclaim its dominant position in the league. Despite these recent team struggles, Dhoni’s individual record cements his status as one of the greatest batters in IPL history. Over the course of 278 matches and 242 innings, he has amassed 5,439 runs at an impressive average of 38.30 and a strike rate of 137.45. With 24 half-centuries and a career-best unbeaten 84.
