In a resounding victory at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh rocked New Zealand by 150 runs on the fifth day of their first Test match on Saturday, December 2. With this historic win, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh team has surged to the second position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table pipping Team India, marking their maiden Test victory against the formidable New Zealand side on home soil.
Currently, Pakistan reign supreme in the World Test Championship points table, having amassed 24 points from two Test matches, maintaining an impeccable points percentage of 100%.
Following their landmark victory over New Zealand in the first Test, Bangladesh have garnered 12 points in the World Test Championship points table, achieving a perfect points percentage of 100. Tim Southee's New Zealand will be eager to bounce back in the second match of the BAN vs NZ Test series, scheduled to commence on December 6 in Dhaka.
As of now, India occupy the third position in the World Test Championship points table with 16 points and a points percentage of 66.67. Australia trails behind in the fourth position with 18 points and a points percentage of 30.
Talking about the match, in a thrilling encounter Bangladesh emerged victorious over New Zealand in the first Test. This triumph marks a significant turnaround for Bangladesh, who had struggled in the previous World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Batting first, Bangladesh set a challenging target of 310 runs for New Zealand. In reply, New Zealand's skipper Kane Williamson brought his A game to the fore, scoring a fluent 104 runs off 205 deliveries. Despite Williamson's valiant efforts, New Zealand could only manage to post 317 runs, giving them a narrow seven-run lead heading into the second innings. However, Bangladesh's bowlers proved too formidable in the second innings, dismantling New Zealand's batting lineup and bowling them out for a mere 181 runs to clinch a comprehensive 150-run victory.
Bangladesh and New Zealand will now lock horns in the second Test, which will be played from December 6 to December 10.
