Shubman Gill scored his second consecutive ODI century during India's first match against New Zealand in Hyderabad as the opener anchored the side's batting. At the same time, skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were dismissed cheaply.
The 23-year-old took just 87 balls to complete his ton, and six balls later created history by becoming the fastest Indian batter to 1000 ODI runs, having achieved the feat in 19 innings and leaving behind Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan at 24 innings.
Gill scored his second ODI ton against Sri Lanka on Sunday, January 15, when the two sides played their final match of the series and helped his side to a massive 317-run victory.
Against New Zealand, Gill reached his century off Mitchell Santner's bowling and rescued the team after the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma (34 runs off 38 balls) and Virat Kohli (8 runs off 10 balls). Even the much-hyped Ishan Kishan failed to score and was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 5 runs in 14 balls.
But as the wickets fall, Gill held his ground and with the score reading 184/4, he completed another great century to take him close to a brilliant personal record.
Kohli and Dhawan took 24 innings to complete 1000 runs in ODI cricket, but Gill took just 19 innings to do the same, having scored three centuries and five half-centuries. This includes an unbeaten innings of 98 against the West Indies and a brilliant innings of 70 runs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka.
The young, in-form opener also moved way up the ladder on the all-time list, equalling the 19 innings by Imam-ul-Haq to move to second, while the top spot has narrowly been retained by Fakhar Zaman
