Team India has been plagued by injuries to some of their premier fast bowlers in the last couple of years. As a result, the Men in Blue have struggled in multinational tournaments, especially with premier paceman Jasprit Bumrah nursing his injury since August 2022. Bumrah missed the 2022 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in Australia. With an injury to the right-arm pacer, Rohit Sharma's men failed to perform in crunch matches and Bumrah's absence was felt dearly, particularly in the 10-wicket loss against England in the T20 World Cup semi-final.
Apart from Bumrah, other Indian pacers have also struggled to make themselves available for selection on a regular basis. And injuries to marquee bowlers have hampered India to sustain their dominance in the sport.
Former India captain and legendary all-rounder, Kapil Dev recently underlines one major reason behind Indian fast bowlers' tryst with injuries.
"Now the season extends to more than 10 months. The more you play the more injuries will happen. Cricket is not a simple game. One has to be athletic, use all the muscles and play on different ground conditions, the softness and the hardness. Adapting to everything is not so easy, it takes a toll on the body. So you crack," Kapil told Gulf News.
The 1983 World Cup-winning captain also highlighted one way by which the Indian bowlers can minimise the chances of getting injured.
"The more you bowl in the net, the more your muscle will start developing. Today, I am told, that the pacers are allowed to bowl only 30 balls. That's one reason. When they take so much stress to play at the professional level, then the body starts cracking. They have to bowl more than anything else," the World Cup-winning captain opined.
