The chase itself was historic. India reached 209 in just 15.2 overs, winning with 28 balls to spare, and in doing so became the fastest team in T20Is to chase a 200+ target. They broke Pakistan’s record of chasing 205 with 24 balls to spare in Auckland in 2025, making India the first team to chase a 200+ total with more than four overs remaining in T20Is.

India also set several other records in the process. After losing two early wickets for just 6 runs, the Men in Blue completed the chase, making it the highest successful run chase after losing the first two wickets in quick succession.

The 209-run chase is also now India’s highest successful chase in T20I history, matching their previous 209-run effort against Australia in Vishakhapatnam in 2023. Additionally, India have now completed a 200+ run chase in T20Is six times, the second-most by any team in the format.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav was back in top form, scoring an unbeaten 82 off just 37 balls, as the Men in Blue crushed New Zealand by seven wickets in the second T20I, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

New Zealand batted first and put up 208 for six, powered by a quick 44 off 26 balls from Rachin Ravindra and useful contributions from other top-order batters. Mitchell Santner later added an unbeaten 47 off 27 balls to push the total past 200, but the Indian bowlers kept things under control after the early onslaught.

Chasing 209, India stumbled early, losing two wickets for just six runs in the second over. However, the innings was rescued by Ishan Kishan’s whirlwind 76 off 32 balls and Suryakumar’s fiery knock.
