Picked for T20I series vs India, 23-year-old New Zealand batter slams 5 fifties in a row, says 'I'm just having fun'
Bevon Jacobs of the Auckland Aces celebrates his half century during the men's T20 Super Smash match against Wellington Firebirds at Basin Reserve on December 29, 2025.

Story Highlights:

Bevon Jacobs has scored five consecutive fifties in Super Smash.

Jacobs is part of T20I squad vs India but not in T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

New Zealand’s young Bevon Jacobs became the talk of the town when he was roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. But, Jacobs did not get to make his IPL debut for the star-studded side. Later, he was released by the franchise ahead of the mini-auction. Now, ahead of the five-T20I series against India, Jacobs is making a name for himself with five consecutive fifties for Auckland in the ongoing New Zealand’s Super Smash T20 tournament.

As Jacobs is having a purple patch, he revealed that he is just enjoying himself at the crease, trying to keep it as simple as he can.

"Yeah, it's been really nice to contribute to the season and I've been enjoying myself out there," Jacobs told the broadcaster after bagging the Player of the Match award for an unbeaten 78 against Otago in the run chase.

"There's no secret to it [five fifties in a row]. I guess I've just been having fun and I guess trying to keep it as simple as possible and just doing what I can to try and get the boys over the line. Obviously, we were disappointed we couldn't do it against the Kings so it was nice that we could finish the job today."

He made his T20I debut against South Africa and scored an unbeaten 44. He did not get a long rope and was dropped after a T20I at home against Australia. The 23-year-old has been picked for the T20I series against India but he does not feature in the T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

Jacobs will have a point to prove on Indian soil if he gets a chance in the T20I series which will kick off on January 21.

How Chapman helped Jacobs

On January 12, Jacobs walked out to bat at no.5. Auckland were 32/3 in the fifth over. He scored 78 runs from 51 deliveries, featuring seven fours and five sixes. He helped Auckland chase down 160 with eight balls to spare. He credited Mark Chapman for helping him navigate the run chase.

“I think me coming in early with Chappy, having someone with his experience is always awesome," Jacobs said. "He kept my head straight and kind of just told me, 'just bat for a bit, heaps of time out there and try and take it as deep as possible' and so we were able to build that partnership and that was really helpful in the scheme of the game."

Jacobs leads the charts in Super Smash

Since the start of Super Smash, he has registered scores of 55, 54, 53, 88 not out and 78 not out. He is currently the leading run-scorer of Super Smash with 328 runs at an average of 164 and strike rate of 173.54.
