India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has a chance to achieve a major personal milestone in the T20I series opener against New Zealand on January 21. Suryakumar needs 25 more runs to complete 9,000 runs in T20 cricket (including T20Is, domestic T20s, franchise T20 cricket).
If an out-of-form Suryakumar manages to do so, he will become the fourth Indian batter to score 9,000 T20 runs. The first on the list is Virat Kohli (13,543 runs), followed by Rohit Sharma (12,248 runs) and Shikhar Dhawan (9,797 runs).

Suryakumar’s T20 record
Overall, Suryakumar will become the 28th batter in T20 cricket history to complete 9,000 runs. In his T20 career that spans over a decade and a half, the 35-year-old Suryakumar has 8,975 runs from 320 innings, averaging 34.78. His strike rate in the format is 152.29. So far, he has scored six centuries and 59 fifties.
Suryakumar’s struggle for runs in 2025
Suryakumar has struggled for form of late. In 2025, he managed to score 218 runs from 19 innings at an average of 13.62 and strike rate of 123.16. His highest score of 47 not out came in the successful run chase against Pakistan in T20 Asia Cup 2025 group stage.
Two low scores in 2026 for Suryakumar in 2026
In the two Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 clashes earlier this month, he could not convert starts into big scores. He registered scores of 24 and 15 against Himachal Pradesh against Punjab respectively.
Suryakumar’s T20I record vs New Zealand's
Suryakumar has played eight T20Is against New Zealand, scoring 284 runs at an average of 47.33 and strike rate of 153.51. One of his four T20I centuries came against the Kiwis as well. In 2022 on New Zealand soil, Suryakumar scored an unbeaten 51-ball 111 in a winning cause.
