India's top-order Virat Kohli is know as a modern day 'chasemaster'. Kohli has umpteen number of records in ODIs to his name. With a 124-run knock in a losing cause, Kohli ended up breaking his former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) teammate Chris Gayle's record for most centuries in unsuccessful ODI run chases. Kohli broke Gayle’s record after almost seven years.
This was Kohli's fifth ODI century in a losing cause. Kohli has scored 2,145 runs from 57 innings in unsuccessful ODI run chases at an average of 38.3. Earlier, Gayle held the record with four centuries from 84 ODI innings while chasing. The self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' has 2,409 runs at an average of 28.67 in such games.

List of Kohli’s ODI centuries in runchases where India lost the game -
It happened for the first time in 2014. Coincidentally, it came against New Zealand as well. He scored 123 runs from 111 balls in Napier. In the run chase of 293, India were bowled out for 268, losing the game by 24 runs.

In January 2016 in Canberra, Kohli scored 106 runs from 92 balls. Alongside him, opener Shikhar Dhawan scored 126 as well. However, India suffered a batting collapse and were bowled out for 323. India lost the match by 25 runs.
In October 2018, Kohli scored 107 runs from 119 balls in a run chase of 284 in Pune. He lacked support from the other end as India were bowled out for 240 in 47.4 overs, losing the game by 43 runs.
In 2019, Kohli scored 123 runs from 95 balls against Australia in Ranchi. In the run chase of 314, India were bowled out for 281. The next high score for the team came off Vijay Shankar's (32) bat.
The latest entrant on the list is the 124-run knock from 108 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana scored fifties but in the slog overs, Kohli lacked support again. India were bowled out for 296 with four overs left in the innings, losing the game by 41 runs in Indore.
Kohli surpasses RCB head coach's brother
Kohli surpassed Zimbabwe legend Grant Flower on the list of most ODI runs in unsuccessful run chases. Grant has 2,027 runs from 75 innings at an average of 27.39, featuring a century and 10 fifties.
The record for most runs in unsuccessful ODI run chases belongs to legendary Sachin Tendulkar. From 101 innings, he has 3,107 runs at an average of 30.76, featuring three centuries and 20 fifties.
