Former England captain Joe Root has expressed uncertainty about how many more Test runs he needs to surpass Sachin Tendulkar's record. Despite the growing calls for him to achieve this feat, Root remains focused on his current form and performance.
In the recent Multan Test against Pakistan, Root reached a significant milestone by surpassing Alastair Cook's total of 12,472 Test runs. He finished the day on 176 not out, marking his 35th Test century. His innings ultimately ended at 262, further solidifying his position as one of the greatest batsmen of his generation.
With 12,664 runs from 147 Tests at an impressive average of 51.47, Root is now only 624 runs away from former India head coach Rahul Dravid's tally of 13,288 runs. However, Sachin Tendulkar's record of 15,921 runs remains a formidable challenge.
Joe Root on breaking Sachin Tendulkar's Test record
Root, while speaking to Sky Sports in an exclusive chat said:
"I've no idea. It's some way off yet".
Joe Root had experienced a year-long drought without scoring a Test century prior to January 2021. During this period, he was afforded additional time off due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But Root proved his batting prowess and made a stunning comeback to regain his form. Root has attributed the changes he made during this time to his subsequent success and improved form.
"In Covid, I spent that period off looking at my game, the areas where I felt there were little holes and weaknesses in it and just really trying to have a really good understanding of my strengths and weaknesses," Root said.
"And then work with the strengths and try to tighten up the areas within my game that needed to just probably raise the level," Root added.
The second between England and Pakistan is slated to start from October 15 at the same venue, Multan.
