Shan Masood enters Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli's list with 145-run knock against South Africa

Pakistan lost the second Test of the series by 10 wickets against South Africa. Pakistan lost the series but captain Shan Masood's resillient knock while following on helped him enter elite list of Asian captains. Here is a list of Asian captains with a Test century on South African soil
 

1. Sachin Tendulkar scored 169 runs from 254 balls against South Africa in Cape Town in 1997. But Tendulkar's century could not save India from a loss by 282 runs. In the mammoth run chase, India were bowled out for 144.
 

2. In 2018, Virat Kohli scored 153 runs from 217 balls featuring 15 fours against South Africa in Centurion. His century went in vain as Lungi Ngidi wreaked havoc with a six-fer and India were bowled out for 151 in the run chase of 287.
 

3. Pakistan captain Shan Masood scored 145 from 251 balls including 17 fours. He helped his team reduce the deficit and eventually avoid a defeat by an innings. Pakistan lost the Test by 10 wickets.
 

4. Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne scored 103 runs from 128 balls including 19 fours against Dean Elgar-led South Africa in 2021 in Johannesburg. Similar to Masood, his century could not help Sri Lanka post a threatening target either. South Africa ended up winning the Test by 10 wickets.
 

Meanwhile, Masood become the second Asian captain who scored a Test century in South Africa as an opener. He is also the sixth visiting captain to score Test century as opener in South Africa.
 

Masood could have broke a few more records but he fell victim to a controversial dismissal. He questioned the hawkeye which he believes showed an outswinger from Kwena Maphaka as an inswinger. He would have had a chance to break Tendulkar's record for highest score by an Asian captain in South Africa.
