Sonny Baker breaks unwanted record with abysmal bowling display against South Africa on ODI debut
The England pacer ended up giving away 76 runs in his 7-over spell against South Africa in the first ODI of the 3-match series

It turned out to be quite a forgetful day at the office for Sonny Baker. The 23-year-old, who made his ODI debut against South Africa on Wednesday, first got dismissed for a golden duck by Keshav Maharaj and then gave a dismal performance with the ball.

Baker ended up being very expensive on his debut and leaked 76 runs in just 7 overs. His deliveries were smacked all around the stadium by the South African batters, who helped their side in easily chasing down the 132-run target and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Baker maintained an expensive economy rate of 10.85 and failed to stop the run-flow whenever he was handed the ball. This performance saw the 22-year-old break an unwanted record and become the England bowler with the worst bowling figures on one-day debut.

Here is the list of England bowlers with the worst bowling figures on ODI debut -
1. Sonny Baker - 0/76
2. Liam Dawson - 2/70
3. David Lawrence - 4/67
4. George Scrimshaw - 3/66

It remains to be seen if Baker will be picked in England's playing XI for the second ODI against South Africa which will take place at Lord's on September 4. The pacer will definitely be looking to improve his performance if he gets the chance to feature in the upcoming game.

Baker had come into the limelight during the recently-concluded season of The Hundred. The pacer featured for the Manchester Originals in the campaign and picked up 9 scalps in 7 matches. He also took an impressive hat-trick against the Northern Superchargers during the season.
