About Shanan Stewart
A hard-hitting batsman, Shanan Stewart had to ply a decade in domestic cricket before he earned a call-up to the national side in the midst of an Australia ODI series in 2010. His aggression with the bat and experience in the middle-order in first-class cricket led to his break at the highest level.
Stewart debuted for Canterbury in 2001, but 2009-10 proved to be his best season as he hit a career-best 227 not out in the Plunket Shield and it was followed by an excellent one-day competition where he scored 511 runs at an average of 56. On the back of his performances and following injury concerns to some of their star players, Stewart was drafted for the last three ODI games against Australia but failed to make an impact. However, Kiwi selectors have been tinkering with batting and bowling combinations and as and when the opportunity crops up, Stewart’s aim will be to cement his place in the already packed New Zealand middle-order.
