Ranji Trophy defending champions Mumbai got their mojo back as they defeated Maharashtra by nine wickets in their second group A league game at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai on Monday.

Needing 74 runs to secure victory, Mumbai entered the final day at 13 runs without loss.

Ayush Mhatre’s dismissal for 15 cost them a bonus point, but Prithvi Shaw, with an impressive 39 not out off 36 balls, and Hardik Tamore, scoring 21 not out off 26 balls, wrapped up the win in just 13.3 overs, earning the team six crucial points.

This victory followed a disappointing start to the tournament, where the 42-time champions fell to Baroda by 84 runs in their opening Ranji Trophy match. However, in their second encounter at the BKC ground, Mumbai showcased their strength in all areas of the game.

The foundation for the win was laid on the first day, as Mumbai bowled out Maharashtra for just 126 runs in their first innings. They then piled up 441 runs, highlighted by a stunning 176 from 17-year-old Mhatre and a powerful 142 from Shreyas Iyer.

Though Maharashtra put up a stronger fight in their second innings, thanks to centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and veteran Ankit Bawne and a near century from former India U-19 player Sachin Dhas, the damage had already been done.
